I try to avoid the generational pissing contests that are the bread and butter of so many Styles pages, but I can’t stop myself from reading them, every damn time. And during my hatereading I’ve realized something–many trendpiece behaviors ascribed specifically to the youngest generation are in fact, not generational at all. They’re just new things that people are doing.
Sometimes the trends originated with the Youngs and quickly rippled up through the New York City Aunts and Austin DINKS so that by the time a generational tendency has been identified, it’s actually more like a widespread vibe among trendoids; those who don’t pay close attention to trending topics mistake it as “of and for the young” when it’s actually just “novel.”
